Her pale skin stretched as a victorious, serpentine smirk formed on her face.

"Caelia, Tellus, I would say it gives me no great satisfaction to expel the both of you from the academy forever, but then I'd be lying."

"Expel us?" Cass blurted, the lump in her throat hardening. "Excuse me?"

With a chalky finger, the teacher pointed at the broken gate.

"Does that sign not say that entry into Vrontísos is strictly forbidden?"

"Well, yeah, but--"

She held a hand to silence the princess. Her robes' long sleeves draped over it. The space in her loose sleeves was as black as her heart as far as Cass was concerned.

"I came across Professor Lunaria who informed me that there were two students inside the forest grounds. And who should I find coming out of the gates but you two? You've been nothing but trouble since the day you set foot on the sacred grounds of this school."

Adam stepped forward. "You've got to listen to us. There were ruins inside the forest, and we found another Automaton who looks just like Gally."

"A likely story," Professor Drusilla scoffed.

"It's the truth!" Cass pleaded. "You've got to listen to us!"

"Well, then, let's allow the disciplinary committee to hear your tall tales and see what they make of them."

She snatched the two students by their collars and dragged them towards the school campus. Cass and Adam begged her to listen to their stories of what happened at the ruins, but she paid them no mind.

The childhood friends exchanged defeated glances as they were separated and shoved back to their barracks. Cass dared not sneak out again or attempt to escape. She plopped herself face-first onto her cot, feeling drained and empty. Duo wasn't around to keep her company. The knots in Cass's stomach worsened as he tried--but failed--to get some sleep. She stayed up the rest of the night into the early morning hours, worrying endlessly about what lay in store for her.
